Am I crazy? It's been a long winter, the weather's finally a perfect 75 degrees and sunny, and I'm - GOING TO ALASKA! We still had snow on the ground in May and although I love the white stuff for a while every year, going on 7 months had all of us in the Midwest a little crazy. When a normally passive, animal loving friend offered to sacrifice a unicorn in return for a little sunshine, we knew things were getting rough. The grass tried. It turned green, but then had to make use of the few warm days to push through the snowbanks. My husbandthought perhaps wearing shorts and grilling would bring out the sun. We had great steaks, but no suntan.
If nothing else, a long winter helps to make us fully appreciate the beautiful weather we've had for the last couple of weeks. So what's my response? Head NORTH.
Today's final packing, tomorrow's the flight to Seattle for a family wedding and a certain visit to Pikes' Market, and then we're on to a full month's adventure beginning with a cruise departing from Juneau. I'm excited about the trip, but one of the wonderful things about travel is the way it makes me appreciate what I'm leaving. The flowering crab in the yard is in full bloom, the grass did finally overtake the snow, the birds are chirping - saying thank GOD we're no longer freezing, and the horses are loving this short window of idyllic weather and few bugs. I'll miss it. The reality is that if I wasn't leaving, I wouldn't have spent nearly as much time over the last few days touching base with good friends, eating some great food prepared by our chef son, gazing off the deck and petting the animals. I love the adventure of travel, but I also love that travel makes me realize what's under my nose in my own backyard and living room.
